Final Assessment

This spring in MIS we learned pertinent information on the usage of various Microsoft programs which will apply to our business careers in whatever field it is that we pursue. One of the most functional and helpful programs – in my opinion – is the Excel program of Microsoft Office. Coming in, I had a general knowledge of how to use the software on the most basic, elementary levels, but now I feel I have a solid command on Excel. Spreadsheets are necessary for use when writing up job times, payment plans, savings plans, and anything else with a list which requires calculations.
A department I would like to have spent a little more time on is the Access database program. Though it may not be as useful throughout every day as excel is, I feel it may come in handy to know one day, maybe it may even land me a job! But back to Excel, it is the best program that Microsoft has to offer (and I am a MAC user).
This class was not only about how to use computer programs, but it also helped me develop as a person. With an instructor like Professor Jorisch I was able to focus on all of my work rather than having him demand I only do the course work for MIS. This fact allowed me to schedule my own daily life and figure out what works best for me in terms of time allotment. I really appreciate having had Professor Jorisch as my teacher and wish I could sign up for another class of his, though that is not the case here.
All in all, this class has been a great experience to be a part of and I look forward to applying these new skills later on in life.

Hi, this is likely my final posting, in this blog entry I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the Professor of the Year, Professor Henry Jorisch.

Professor Jorisch is likely the most kind-hearted man I have ever had the chance to interact with. He is a sweet, caring man who cares more about his students and their lives than any other professor I have met in Yeshiva University. It has been my pleasure to be in his class and to learn about the Microsoft programs through invaluable lessons. Any time that I had a conflict with work and my personal life or the baseball team, he showed concern and sympathy, in addition, he relieved all stress of that instance by simply giving a one day extension. For all of these reasons, he is the Professor of the Year, and I would not be surprised if he received that honor annually, if only he were staying. And thus, I would like to thank him for everything he has done for me, and the class all year round, and for being one of the kindest people I know.

Now, down to the work. This is a compilation of all the write-ups on the class assignments.

Excel case 1:
In this portion, we learned to use the sum function as well as to perfect the more fundamental pieces of Excel. Selecting a cell, selecting a range of cells, and editing text within said cells.

Excel case 2:
Here, we were instructed to make different cells in various cell styles, fonts, and to merge those cells. We used the comma format and a quick date insert function. We also used the sum button to create formulas and with those formulated cells, create charts.

Excel case 3:
Headers, fill handle, and complex formulas were covered in this section. We all know that absolute reference is why Professor Jorisch was awarded his first job over other people, and that seems extremely pertinent, I am glad to say that through this case, I was able to nail down that function.

Excel case 4:
Building on the last case mentioned, here we used relative AND absolute cell references, calculated averages and the maximums of a selected range using the other functions below the SUM button. The fill handle also made a large impact in this case, and we also moved around worksheets.

Excel case 5:
Here we really went crazy with the cell styles, indentations, and the “merge and center” functions. We also had to remove rows and columns (you simply right click on the row or column-its that easy). Repositioning charts was a little bit of a pain with the way the website grades the assignments, but I got it to work out.

Excel case 6:
Once we knew how to create a formula or a reference, we had to really apply that skill, in this case, we edited previously made formulas, changed worksheet names, copied cell contents, and used the cell style function (the total style). I learned a new bit about fill handling, when inserting the tee times, you had to insert two times so that the computer knew how to continue the series, an invaluable piece of knowledge.

PowerPoint case 1&2:
I personally find PowerPoint rather easy to use, but some stuff was still iffy for me. We had to add bullets, AND sub-bullets which was new for me. We inserted shapes, edited colors, added text to slides, and even added new slides. We also created an entire bulleted list, entered subtitles as well as titles, and added slides to a presentation.

Finally I have completed all course work, and would like to finally thank my mentor personally.

Thank you Professor Jorisch for a marvelous semester and for imparting on me complete functional knowledge of these extremely important programs. I feel that I now have a firm grasp on these necessary functions and I owe that directly to you. Thank you very much and I wish you continuing success in al of your endeavors.

MY Origin for real

My name is Clark Kent, son to Johnathan and Martha Kent. We live in a small rural town of Smallville, Kansas. My best friend is also my love interest- Lana Lang. My father is sworn enemies with Lionel Luthor who has a bald son named Lex. Lex is a very unbeloved son who is mistreated and therefore has no manners toward me or my friends and family.

I was born on the planet Krypton as Kal-El son of Jor-El. My father, a scientist on the planet Krypton developed and trapped three rogue Kryptonian prisoners led by General Zahd. After the planet was destroyed, I came to planet Earth in a capsule, and after years of maturation, I learned that i summon my Kryptonian strength from the red sun on Earth. Unfortunately the other Kryptonians escaped from the prison set forth by my father, known as "The Phantom Zone" and came to planet Earth where they too can harness the energy of the sun. Long story short- I won and defeated the bad men regaining peace on Earth.

P.S. Don't tell anyone that my only weakness is Kryptonite.

My Origin part deux

Raphael Y.A. Lipschitz. The name given to me at birth has stayed with me throughout these wonderful 19 years, and I am very proud to have the name of my Zaide. Jerry (Judah Leib) Lipschitz was an upstanding member of his community in Boropark, Brooklyn living with his wife Anna (Channah) and 4 children- Mordechai, Yoel, Gittel, and my father, Ben.

Having been named after him I never got a chance to meet him, as he died two years before I was born. He taught me through stories that I heard of him that money matters not when dealing with more important things such as family and life. Having owned a jewelry store, he was getting robbed on a somewhat bi-yearly basis, and sometimes even at gunpoint. My father told me that the first thing he ever said was “Please take the money, I don’t want any trouble, take whatever you like but lower the gun”.

The final time that he was ever in the store a man with a gun robbed him, and as my Zaide went to open the cash register, the mugger thought he was reaching for a gun and shot my Zaide at point blank range in the chest. As my Zaide puts it “The bullet went in here (points to chest) and came out here (points to his shoulder blade)”. His family was lucky that the doctors were able to take care of him, and that he had multiple years of life after the shooting. Although thankfully he was alive, since that night, he had become a paraplegic and was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Through all the years in the wheelchair he was getting older and getting sick, eventually falling very ill. He was given the name Raphael (pronounced Rih-Fah-Ehl in Hebrew) to throw off the illness (a customary Jewish practice). That is the name that carried over to me in its entirety, and I am extremely proud to have it. Two final things that I got from my Zaide were his Tefillin and his sense of needing to take a shot of alcohol before leaving his store to “keep him warm”.

It's a bird...It's a plane... No! It's Superman

This casegrader was not meant for a bunch of little sissies, it called for something more... The Dynamic Duo of Batman & Superman (M & R).

As we progress through this semester, the boys and the men are becoming separated, due to the difficulty of the casegrader assignments. The gradebook corrections helped to point out where I went wrong, and got a little trigger happy with the "Enter" key. The line spacing is what caught my eye on this assignment, the fact that there is a quick tool on the ribbon toolbar with which to simplify the indents and spacing process.

This was a toughie, but we got through it and plan on striving through the rest of this course.

casegrader 2

The second assignment for the MIS class was a toughie considering the fact that casegrader is against Mac users. But with the help of my trusted buddy Batman (Matthew), we got through it.

I liked the part of the assignment where we had to use the find and replace tool more than once. As well as the thesaurus function, I thought that was extremely neat where you highlight and then insert the word of your choice. One of the cooler tools of Word that we have at our disposal that I did not appreciate until this assignment is the formatting (paint brush) tool, it makes reformatting words much simpler.

Casegrader 01

Casegrader was a ton of fun to use, the intracacies of how the internet works in conjunction with Word to grade the assignments is very NEAT.

The first assignment was rather elemntary, or I just happen to have a rockin' professor, which I assume is the case, and not that it was simple.

That's it for now

Office 2007 changes

Some of the changes in the 2007 version of Word that I noticed (while not interesting to me because I don't use word for more than a simple word processor) are as follows:

The use of ribbons to compact everything into a smaller section of the processor is very useful for me, because I like things to be neat, compact, and hidden (in terms of menu size).

I also found the picture section to be very groovy, the fact that the menu is normally hidden and when you click a picture image, only then does the menu for that section appear, I like that very much. So I guess I would call that "Interesting".

YC Honors Incoming Freshmen

Today the honor's class from MTA and JEC came fopr a visit to our MIS class. Josh found this tpo be very entertaining, and wished he could be part of their little group because they are geniuses. He feels that if he were in the honors class, then maybe, just maybe, Janie would visit for him,and not for Dan - his much cooler roommate.

My 5 Goals

So I didn't get to do any introductions on my first post and I would like to do that now.

You will be reading this blog from Rafi Lipschitz hailing from Oceanside, NY. Currently at Yeshiva University's Sy Syms School of Business, I chose YU because of it's religious environment, and the Beis Medrash Program to continue with the learning that I did in Israel.

5 goals that I feel are pertinent and are actually attainable are as follows:
(These are in no specific order)

1) To raise my children in the Jewish tradition, and give them the tools necessary to accomplish whatever THEY would like to with their lives.

2) Become a trusted businessman with a stand-up reputation by practicing in business with a high moral standard.

3) Travel to a few exotic countries to see how wonderful those places are.

4) Establish myself and my family in a Jewish community where we have a good environment for child raising.

5) Remain healthy and in shape up through my latter years so that i don't just "get old" as i continue to grow in years, and this way i can stay active to be with my grandchildren.
